Its claim to fame as one of Europe's largest castle complexes will seem accurate as you explore. Be sure to ascend the central tower for spectacular panoramic views across the Spiš region, and imagine yourself as a patrolling medieval guard whilst traipsing this colossal fortress's outer walls. The castle was built in the 13th century to defend the trade route across this part of the country and there are some exemplary views over the Gemer region from within its walls. Part of the exhibition is given over to displays of brutal wartime weaponry and armour, as well as torture equipment, and the castle is something of a one-stop-shop for an insight into the region's feudal violence, medieval living, and, for the lucky ones, limitless affluence. The Manor house has almost 50 rooms and its interior is very romantic and luxurious. There is a spectacular historical library filled with ca 18 000 old volumes, winter garden, and lot of souvenirs from hunts and abroad travels (for example an Egyptian mummy, samurai's armature, Eskimo outfit, original lotus shoes from China, etc.). Manor house is surrounded by an 80-hectare English park filled in with many rare wood species, metal garden sculptures, fountains. There is even an artificial cave with a 8 meters high waterfall. Hrad sa prvýkrát spomína v prvej polovici 13. storočia v listine kráľa Bela IV. V minulosti bol správnym centrom Turnianskej stolice. Zo stredovekého hradu dodnes stoja múry jednotlivých objektov (bašty, múry opevnenia, paláce, veža) a v skalnej ceste sú dodnes viditeľné stopy po kolesách vozov zo stredoveku. |
